Project Background: The BRWSSP project included the construction of water supply systems, technical assistance for stakeholders and rapid response for disasters, emergencies and other catastrophic events. The project aims to ensure reliable access to arsenic-free, safe water in the rural areas of Bangladesh.

Objectives of the Assignment: Overall objective of the Sanitation Pilot component of the project is to carry out sanitation and hygiene promotion programs in target area in line with the Bangladesh “National Sanitation Strategy” to promote hygiene and safe, sustainable sanitary practices.

Actual Services provided by SAMAHAR:

  • Building capacity of community leaders to facilitate the whole community baseline using PRA tools, such as social mapping, wealth ranking and development of the action plan to improve the water and sanitation situation of their community and prepare Ward Action Plan (WAP).
  • Building capacity of community Leaders to mobilize the community people to ensure total sanitation using different participatory tools and techniques with special emphasis on poor, women and children.
  • Building capacity of community leaders to support local entrepreneurs for marketing their products and monitor the progress
  • Promotion of hygiene behavior on hand washing, use of latrine and use of safe water.
  • Building awareness on hygienic management of sanitary services including cleanliness of latrine, water points, solid and liquid waste management.
  • Capacity building of local entrepreneur’s/Market development for sustainable solutions
  • Development of private sector: Capacity building of small local entrepreneurs/masons on multiple latrine options and hand washing devices.
  • Support the local entrepreneurs to use different communication tools and channels for marketing.
  • Support DPHE for monitoring the quality of services.
  • Support Union Parishad to ensure the receiving of incentive grant for the poorest households from the project.
  • Assist them to prepare the sub proposal and channel the money (incentive) to the entrepreneurs on behalf of poor households.
