Assignment Background: The present Government of Bangladesh pledges modernization of the unani, ayurvedic and homeopathic medical care as an alternative to the widespread allopathic system. Alternative medicine has been playing a significant role in the healthcare delivery system in the developing countries of this region from time immemorial. The World Health Organization is providing financial and technical support for the improvement of unani, ayurvedic and homeopathic systems of medical care in Bangladesh. To grow medicinal plants and create awareness of the local people about medicinal plants, 467 demonstration herbal gardens have been established, one in each district hospital and Upazilas health complex premise One herbal gardener (herbal assistant) has been appointed for each herbal garden to take care of the garden. As of now, a total of 575 alternative medical care (AMC) health personnel and staff are working at different places. The total number of sanctioned posts is 1422. According to reports collected from selected 45 District Sadar Hospitals in 2011, about 20% of the OPD patients are treated by Alternative Medical Care (AMC) doctors. Apart from the government services, some of the graduates and diploma-holders are working in different NGOs and private organizations. About 80,000 different categories of AMC doctors are practicing in our country and about 700 industries are producing Unani, Ayurvedic and Homeopathic drugs. In order to determine the challenges and opportunities for strengthening alternative medicine (Unani, Ayurvedic, and homeopathic) in Bangladesh, the Line Director of Alternative Medical Care (AMC), DGHS, intends to conduct a situational analysis.
Objectives of the Assignment:
To conduct a situational analysis to identify the obstacles and prospects for enhancing alternative medicine (Unani, Ayurvedic, Homeopathic) in Bangladesh;
To assess the challenges and opportunities associated with the development of alternative medicine in Bangladesh;
To analyze the current situation of Unani, Ayurvedic, and Homeopathic practices in Bangladesh to determine the potential for improvement;
To evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of alternative medicine (Unani, Ayurvedic, Homeopathic) in Bangladesh through a situational analysis; and
To identify the opportunities and challenges that exist for the advancement of alternative medicine (Unani, Ayurvedic, Homeopathic) in Bangladesh
Actual Services provided by SAMAHAR:
 Conduct survey in Graduate level (all graduate institute, Diploma level- Homeopathic 40% Total Diploma College in Bangladesh include Govt.& Non-Govt. (Homeopathic), Govt. Homeopathic Medical College, Mirpur-14, Dhaka & Bangladesh, Homeopathic Medical College Hospital, Joykali Mondir, Gulistan, Dhaka.
 Transfer of knowledge through training among the data collectors before collecting data;
 Assess the performance of personnel engaged in providing service and facilities available to the service recipients;
 Measure the level of execution of the draft national strategy and action plan in the Education Institutes;
 Identify the Challenges and opportunity in undergraduate and graduate and post-graduation level;
 Collect a certificate from the managers of Cost Center regarding the completion of the task and submit it to the client accordingly;
 Conduct FGD (Meeting with Stake holder & use in interest Group);
 Conduct meeting with Monitoring & Evaluation Group (interest);
 Prepare of recommendation on the basis of collected data from the field;
 Organize Dissemination workshop with attain superior level management.
